The island of San Giulio and the Orta lake´s history
The Oceanman Orta in Italy will take place saturday 20 June 2015 on the waters of the Lake of Orta.
This beautiful lake is located in the province of Novara, in the Piedmont region in northern Italy and is the westernmost of the pre-alpine lakes. Located 290 meters above sea level, has an area of 18.2 square meters and took the name of Lake of Orta only from the seventeenth century.
Previously it was called Lake of San Giulio, taking the name from the main village close to it, Orta San Giulio and from the island placed at its center, the island of San Giulio.
A legend makes even more magical this lake. At the end of the fourth century, the two greek brothers Giulio and Giuliano (later saints) arrived on the shores of the lake to shoot down the places of worship pagan and to build churches, by permission of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I that, at that time, made Christianity the mandatory religion of the empire.
Legend tells that St. Giulio had left his brother Giuliano the task of building in Gozzano the ninety-ninth church, trying to find by himself the place where to build the hundredth.
Founded the right place in the small island, but not finding anyone that ferry him, Giulio knock down his cloak on the water sailing on it.
On the island, Giulio defeated dragons and snakes that living there, obvious symbol of pagan superstition, sending them away forever and laying the foundations of the church in the same place where now stands the Basilica of San Giulio.
