CROSSING THE ISLAND OF LOBOS ARRIVES AT ITS 35TH EDITION - 2013

CROSSING THE ISLAND OF LOBOS ARRIVES AT ITS 35TH EDITION - 2013

The story of the Crossing of the island of Lobos began in the summer of 1978, when coaches Mauri Fonseca, João Carlos André Merch and Daunis, from Mauri Fonseca's School of Swimming, in partnership with the Municipality of Torres and SAPT - Society of Beach Torres Friends, organized a crossing to swim between the island of Lobos and the Praia Grande Beach. After the race, the organization continued with the swimming school Raia Center, Clerks Travelers Club, and the school Pra Nadar. The South Island of Lobos requires the athlete enough guidance and experience, with the main obstacles the lack of vision of the athlete, which is determined by the waves. Moreover, sea currents can lead to swimmer distant points of the finish line, and the water temperature around the island of Lobos is low, even in summer, when hardly passes of 22 º C. This is the only crossing in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the open sea and dropped into the sea, where swimmers are led by a schooner. The crossing is considered short, it has a distance of 1.8 km, but despite the short distance, this presents some obstacles like waves, cold water and the poor visibility of the finish line. But the sight that unfolds is beautiful, with buildings against the backdrop of the mountains framing the landscape. This year is the 35th edition. The Island of Lobos, an environmental conservation unit of Brazil, is the only oceanic island in Rio Grande do Sul and the only one in Brazil to accommodate sea lions in the winter months.
