ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ CROSSING PROJECT

ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ CROSSING PROJECT

The Escape From Alcatraz Crossing Project aims to bring three master swimmers from Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil, to cross the bay from San Francisco, USA, from the island of Alcatraz and into the city of San Francisco, swimming a distance of approximately 1,800 meters. The project is a challenge since its inception, because the waters have very low temperature, strong currents, high vessel traffic and even sharks. Departing from a pier near the famous Golden Gate Bridge, the athletes will be led to the island. This project began the dream of the masters swimmers to perform in the U.S.. Alcatraz, known by its former inmates as "The Rock", was a maximum security prison which, due to its location, made escape almost impossible. In 29 years as a prison no one alive has ever escaped. Every year this event attracts a weekend in the month of June, more than 25,000 spectators on the sands of Golden Gate National Park to see who can accomplish this challenge. Under the guidance of Vladimir Alcorte, Siviero Francismar masters swimmers, the Club Náutico Gaúcho Gremio, Enio Rubechini and Jair Pedersen, Club Salesman (Caixeiros Viajantes) intend to carry out his dream of playing an international crossing in 2012. Preparations begin in August, with 11 months in advance.
